EDITOR'S NOTE

Set your alarm — or don't go to bed. England play Mexico in the Round of 16 at 1am BST in the small hours of Monday morning. Closer to home, the week's big moment is Thursday: Reading Biscuit Factory reopens on Kings Road. And a quiet planning week produced one genuinely interesting application — the famous pie shop's plans for Castle Street.

FEATURED THIS WEEK

England vs Mexico — World Cup Round of 16, Monday 6 July, 1am BST

Kickoff at the Estadio Azteca in Mexico City — 1am UK time in the early hours of Monday. A win means a quarter-final in Miami on Saturday 11 July, against Brazil or Norway. If you're watching in town on Sunday night, plan the Monday morning accordingly.

BEST FOR KIDS

Caversham Pier to Goring river cruise — Friday afternoons, 2pm. New for 2026: 2.5 hours one-way down the prettiest stretch of the Thames, past Mapledurham and Pangbourne. Selected Fridays — check dates when booking.

NEW THIS WEEK

Reading Biscuit Factory reopens Thursday 9 July. The Kings Road indie cinema and arts venue is back after its licence suspension was lifted — members get a 39-day extension, and listings are live at readingbiscuitfactory.co.uk.

HEADS UP

Under three weeks until the bus changes: Pink 22 (Caversham Heights) and Route 12 (Twyford) are cancelled from Monday 20 July. Plan alternatives now if you use either — details in Useful Updates.

👨‍👩‍👧 Things To Do

Kids & Family

Caversham Pier to Goring cruise — Friday 10 July, 2pm (selected Fridays), from Caversham Pier. Thames RiverCruise's new-for-2026 one-way trip: 2.5 hours through the prettiest stretch of the Thames. Family-friendly. Book at whatsonreading.com →

Pulsometer 125, Reading Museum — free drop-in exhibition on the engineering firm at the heart of Reading since 1901. Closes Saturday 18 July, so this week and next are your last chances. Blagrave Street, Tuesday–Saturday.

Adults · Date Night

BalletBoyz — Tuesday 7 July, 7:30pm, The Hexagon. The acclaimed all-male dance company on Reading's main stage — athletic, cinematic, and a good introduction to contemporary dance for the sceptical. Book at whatsonreading.com →

Shear Madness, The Mill at Sonning — ongoing to mid-August. The interactive whodunit at the dinner-theatre on the Thames island at Sonning — the audience votes on the ending each night, dinner included. Still the most reliable date night within 15 minutes of town.

Weekend Events

Sat 11 July: Reading Bach Choir summer concert, 7:30pm — see whatsonreading.com for venue and tickets.

Sat 11 July: if England beat Mexico, the quarter-final is tonight in Miami — expect the pubs to be busy.

Looking ahead: Reading Dino Trail — brick-built dinosaurs across the town centre — starts 25 July; Edinburgh comedy previews (Glenn Moore & Jonny Pelham) at South Street, Friday 17 July.

🏙️ What's New in Reading

Reading Biscuit Factory reopens Thursday 9 July. The Kings Road indie cinema and arts venue is back after months of closure following a licensing review. Members receive a 39-day extension for the closure period, and the full film and events programme resumes from Thursday.

Kings Meadow festival cleared for August. A new festival at Kings Meadow has been given the go-ahead for later this summer. Details still emerging — one to watch.

🚧 Useful Reading Updates

Rail — back to normal. The overnight engineering between Tilehurst and Didcot Parkway finished on Friday 3 July, so services west of Reading return to the standard timetable from Monday. No major Reading-area works are listed for this week, but check before late-evening travel. Check gwr.com before travelling →

Buses — final reminder. From Monday 20 July: Pink 22 (central Reading–Caversham Heights) and Route 12 (Reading–Twyford) are cancelled. Same date, some good news: Aqua 28/28a switches to a faster route to Henley via Reading Bridge, and Little Berries 29/29a doubles its Sunday frequency. Details at reading-buses.co.uk.

A4 roundabout scheme confirmed. Major changes at the Suttons Seeds roundabout on the A4 London Road are going ahead — new bus lanes, updated signals and layout changes to cut delays. Work runs through to September 2027, so expect roadworks on that corridor for a while.

Planning — a quiet week. Twenty-three decisions came through last week, all householder extensions, tree works and condition discharges — nothing significant. One newly validated application worth watching: Sweeney & Todd, the venerable pie shop at 10 Castle Street, has applied to convert to a mixed restaurant/takeaway with four flats on the floors above. Also validated: upper floors at 58 Kings Road converting from offices to three flats.

HIDDEN GEM OF THE WEEK

The Cole Museum of Zoology, University of Reading
Tucked inside the Health & Life Sciences building at Whiteknights, and almost nobody outside the university knows it's open to the public. A complete elephant skeleton, a five-metre python, and cabinets of beautifully prepared specimens — proper Victorian-style natural history, free to visit on weekdays. Term-time hours can vary, so check the university's website before making a special trip. Pair it with a walk around the Whiteknights lake.

WEATHER THIS WEEK

Warm and settled, with high pressure in charge — mostly dry with hazy sunshine, and the possibility of another hot spell building early in the week. Highs in the mid-to-high 20s. Good conditions for the river cruise and Forbury lunches; take water if you're up late for the football on Sunday night.
